Description

by Muriel Angelil
This memoir is about the life of a little Christian girl growing up in Islamic Alexandria, Egypt during the forties, through WWII and the battle of El Alamein and up to the political upheaval of King Farouk’s removal and the military coup headed by Gamal Abdul Nasser. It is a story of a girl’s trials and experiences with her mother and father as she learned to maneuver through her childhood, teens and finally womanhood. It describes Alexandria with colorful prose including swimming in the Mediterranean Sea, sailing by moonlight in the harbor, riding in the desert, playing along the pyramids of Giza in Cairo and traveling by train from Haifa(Palestine) to Cairo during an air raid. It is the journey of a child growing up to adulthood and following her dream of finding her voice through education, independence from familial authority and finally immigration to the USA.
