The American Dowser (Digest)

The American Dowser is a quarterly publication and relies on contributions from YOU, our members. Please contribute!   The American Dowser depends on you for the material that goes into it. Keep in mind that the editors work on a volunteer basis and work to the best of their ability to meet established printing schedules.  We greatly appreciate your submissions as well as your help in meeting our submission deadlines.

Each issue -- Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall -- has a different editor, thus offering you a different perspective each quarter.

Guidelines:

Contributions should be sent to our main office.  Articles and items in one issue are forwarded on to the editors of subsequent issues.

Photos, pictures, and diagrams are appreciated and add greatly to the publication’s visual interest.  If you choose to include your photo with your article and bio, it may be used depending on space.

Please include your contact information (e.g., location, email address, phone) with your submission. A brief background sketch of the author, to be printed with your article, is greatly appreciated by the editors and our readers.

Scientific papers should include a brief summary in everyday language at the beginning of the article. 

If you submit to the Digest any material (article, cartoon, etc.) previously published in the print media, please obtain permission to reprint from its source (magazine/newspaper/ book author/etc.) and send the permission along with your submission. We cannot consider your submission without such permission to reprint.

ARTICLES FOR THE 2008 EDITIONS** MUST BE RECEIVED NO LATER THAN:

** In order to reestablish a printing schedule that will allow for delivery in the proper season, we are advancing our deadlines incrementally in 2008 and 2009.  With new editors and a new printer in 2008, we will take this year to determine a schedule that best facilitates a quality and timely publication for our members.  We will announce the 2009 deadlines in the coming months.

Publication Dates:

Of course as with any publication that is done on a volunteer basis, things that are unexpected and unplanned can come up. Delays are possible, but not expected.

After the editor assembles and edits an issue, and readies it for publication, which takes about two months, it is sent to the printer. The proofing and printing process take at least another month. Mailing generally takes from one to four weeks, depending on your location.  By 2009, our goal is to have the publication to the members by the 15th of the following months: Winter - January 15th; Spring - April 15th; Summer - July 15th (our Annual Convention may delay this a bit); and Fall - October 15th.

ELECTRONIC FORMAT:  Articles should be sent via electronic format (if at all possible). They must be sent in Microsoft WORD format as an email attachment.   Please do not format your article as it takes more time to undo and redo your article. We do like it when you use quotation marks, italics and underline where necessary grammatically, but please do not bold face or use capitals for emphasis as this makes it more difficult for us to undo. At this time, if you mail us a diskette or a CD with your article, there is a possibility it *may* not be read.

Photos and graphics must be sent in the format of tiff or jpeg at 300 dpi (dots per inch). Color or black and white are fine.

PRINT (Hard Copy):  Your manuscript should be double-spaced and have wide margins. Your article *may* not be published if it requires retyping. Possibly you have a friend who could type it for you and submit it electronically.

Please keep a copy of your article, as contributions are not returned.
